Free BreastScreen Qld service to tour the Cape

Read time will display here.

BreastScreen Queensland’s Cairns team will provide free breast screens (mammograms) in their tour of various Cape locations during July and August.

The tour will begin at Lakeland on 5 July, before heading on to Pormpuraaw, Coen, Aurukun, Weipa, Mapoon, Napranum, and Lockhart River.

BreastScreen Queensland Cairns Health Promotion Officer Sandra Peut is encouraging local women to attend the free service while it is in their area.

“A breast screen is the best way to detect breast cancer early, often before any changes can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor,'' Ms Peut said.

"However, if a woman does experience any breast symptoms, she should always consult her doctor as soon as possible.''

One in seven women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life.

“Early detection can save your life, providing the best chance of effective treatment, increased survival, and improved quality of life,” Ms Peut said.

Women aged over 40 are eligible for a free breast screen every two years. However, women aged 50-74 are strongly encouraged to have regular two-yearly breast screening, as this is the age group that benefits most from screening.
