Temporary change to TI Hospital entrance as redevelopment continues

The entrance to the Thursday Island Hospital’s Emergency Department will be temporarily moved while stage three of the Thursday Island Hospital Redevelopment continues.

“While the Emergency Department (ED) rooms are upgraded, the ED will move into a temporary space. Access to the ED, maternity and the General Ward will be through the door to left of the breezeway.” Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Acting Executive General Manager (North) Frank Grainer said.

“Construction of the maternity ward is already under way, with handover expected in November 2023. We expect the Emergency Department to be completed in December 2023.”

The old entrance to the emergency department will be blocked off during construction, with clear signage directing people to the temporary entrance.

The overall hospital redevelopment commissioning is expected to be completed in early 2024.

Additional funding was approved for the Thursday Island Hospital project in December last year, increasing the total project value from $36 million to $53 million.

Mr Grainer was grateful for the community’s support.

“We appreciate everyone’s continued patience. Although there’s been a lot of changes with the redevelopment, we continue to offer health services as normal.”

When completed in early 2024, the redeveloped Thursday Island Hospital will have:

  • 31 inpatient beds,
  • 7 emergency department spaces,
  • 2 negative pressure rooms
  • operating theatre with 4 recovery spaces,
  • a birthing suite with a birthing bath and additional procedural space that can also be used for emergency birthing.
  • 5 outpatient rooms
  • an enhanced medical imaging department with a new CT scanner service, the first for the Torres Strait.
