The future looks bright at Weipa, with solar panels installed on the Administration and Birthing Wing buildings at Weipa Integrated Health Service (IHS).
This installation marks the first stage of the larger Weipa Energy project, with solar panels to be installed across much of the facility roof space.
During a recent visit to the site on 6 October, the newly installed panels highlighted the significant investment being made in a more sustainable future for Weipa IHS.
Once complete, the project will include 834 solar panels, forming a 429-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system with battery storage.
Together, these systems will allow the IHS to harness the abundant Cape York sunshine, reducing reliance on the electricity grid and lowering energy costs.
As one of Queensland Health's higher electricity consumption facilities, Weipa IHS was identified as an ideal location for solar power. The project supports Queensland Health's commitment to reducing carbon emissions while investing in more sustainable healthcare facilities.
Expected to be complete by the end of this year, the project will help reduce electricity expenses, lower the facility’s environmental footprint and support ongoing delivery of healthcare services in Weipa.
