A shared understanding of what matters most

We develop the Joint Regional Needs Assessment (JRNA) by working with health partners, government agencies and local communities. It combines data, professional experience and local insights to help us plan, invest in and improve our services.

The JRNA is more than a report. It is a shared tool we use to make decisions that improve health outcomes for the people and communities we serve. This ensures all organisations work together on the same priorities.

Our shared priorities

Health equity and the social factors that affect health are at the centre of all our priorities. These factors guide how we plan and deliver our services.

For 2025-2028, the following are the health and service priorities for people living in Cape York, Northern Peninsula Area, and the Torres Strait.

Availability and access to services and care

We help people to access the right care, in the right place and at the right time, regardless of their location.

Health promotion and prevention

We support healthier communities through early intervention, health literacy and prevention-focused care.

Maternal and child health

We provide coordinated care to improve the health of mothers, babies and children in early life.

Chronic condition management

We reduce the impact of chronic disease through better prevention, early management and integrated care.

Social and emotional wellbeing

We respond to mental health needs and strengthen wellbeing for all ages and communities.

Workforce and skill shortages

We develop and keep skilled and culturally capable staff to meet the needs of remote communities.

Older persons health and end of life care

We support ageing well through access to aged care, dementia support and end-of-life care.

Culturally safe services

We include cultural safety and community partnership in everything we do to recognise the unique strengths of our region.

Looking ahead

The JRNA changes as we gain new insights and community needs grow. We review the assessment every year and perform a full update every 3 years. We make sure our planning stays relevant and uses facts.

By working with our community, partners and staff, we continue to build a stronger and fairer health system for our region.
