Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Board Chair, Renee Williams

An 8-person board with experience in First Nations health, business and leadership has been appointed to help shape the future of healthcare in the Torres and Cape region.

The newly appointed Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Board, announced today, will be led by continuing Chair Renee Williams.

“It’s wonderful to see two new faces joining the board this year, Mr Don Bowley OAM and Ms Yolonde Entsch,” Ms Williams said.

“The Torres and Cape HHS board this year also includes reappointed member and local clinician Dr Gavin Cleland, who brings extensive expertise in paediatrics and leadership to the HHS Board.

“Dr Cleland has been a consultant paediatrician for more than 10 years, including for our health service.

“I know Dr Cleland will make a valuable contribution to the HHS Board owing to his health expertise and local knowledge.

“This is a diverse group of people with a range of backgrounds, experience and skills, spanning fields such as First Nations health, business and leadership, working together to ensure the community is well represented in the health space.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the Board to ensure our health service continues to thrive and deliver quality health services to our diverse communities across Cape York, the Northern Peninsula Area and the Torres Strait.’’

The Torres and Cape HHS joins all other Queensland hospital and health services in continuing to ensure at least one local frontline practitioner is on the board.

Changes to the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 were announced last year, requiring all 16 of Queensland’s hospital and health service boards to include at least one registered health practitioner currently working for it local health service.

These changes come into effect for the first time on 1 April 2026.
